The New Reading Rules
How to make more time in your day for books
Over the last couple of years I noticed that the number of books I’d been reading had fallen significantly. Part of it was due to personal circumstances; my husband had been ill and life was busy but mostly it was due to a dwindling attention span and too many distractions. It was time for a reading reset.
I’ve touched on the subject before (and you can read my piece here) but today I want to share some of the rules I’ve set for myself which have helped me to carve out more time for reading and engage more meaningfully with my chosen book.
Since the beginning of the year I’ve been averaging 10 books a month compared to three or four previously. Of course we all know that when it comes to reading, quality beats quantity every time. It doesn’t matter how many books we tick off our list; reading isn’t a competition but it is nice to be able to read widely.
Of course, we’re all different kinds of readers. Some of us are quick, racing through books, eager to reach the end while others linger over every sentence. The kind of book we choose makes a difference too. A beach read can be polished off in a matter of hours while a classic or more literary novel demands more from us and takes longer to finish.
But whatever kind of reader we are, whatever book we’ve chosen, modern life seems determined to throw obstacles in our way. Aside from the age-old distractions of work and family responsibilities, research has shown that our attention spans are being shrunk by social media. We’re bombarded with information from multiple sources, encouraging us to skim information rather than engage in any kind of critical thinking. Our brains struggle to deal with the daily sensory overload and we can find ourselves suffering from a constant feeling of low level anxiety. It’s ironic that reading, which has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and slow cognitive decline, can so easily fall victim to the traps of the digital age.
If, like me, you’re determined to prioritise reading there are certain things you can do change your habits and make more time in your life for books.
Stop scrolling
How many hours a day do you spend scrolling - one, two, six? I run my own business and it relies heavily a strong online presence but there’s a fine line between constructive activity and mindless scrolling.
While it’s great to post and catch up with your online community, scrolling devours your precious time. Setting yourself limits will free you up for more mindful activities including reading.
If you don’t believe me, have an honest look at how much time you spend doom scrolling or watching pointless reels? You’ll be surprised or perhaps even horrified.
Step away from the devices
Closely related to the previous point, this one has made a huge difference to my ability to concentrate.
You know what it’s like. You start by checking a word you’re not sure about on your phone and before you know it, you’ve been watching funny cat videos for 20 minutes. in. In order to concentrate properly on what I’m reading, I have to keep my phone at arm’s length or even in a different room. I haven’t tried any of them yet but there are even apps out there that block you from social media during scheduled reading time. If you’re struggling to make the break then it might be worth giving one a whirl.
Pick your moment
Work out your optimal time for reading. I’ve always loved reading before I go so sleep but these days I struggle to keep my eyes open beyond 9pm.
Since the beginning of the year I’ve been experimenting with reading a few chapters first thing. I get up, make myself some tea, pop on a heat mask for my dry eye (one of the reasons reading at night can be so difficult) and meditate for five minutes while it works its magic. Then, before I’ve checked my emails or embarked on the inevitable doom scroll, I read in bed.
It’s almost an extension of the meditation, half an hour or so being fully immersed in a book creates a sense of focus and quietness before the day crowds in. This doesn’t mean I don’t read at other times (I’ll still take any chance I can to spend time with my head in a book) but because I’ve set aside that time for reading, effectively given myself permission to do it, it somehow feels more meaningful. And because I’m fresh my concentration levels are high and I feel like I can tackle more challenging works.
Never Leave the House without a Book
On the bus or train, while you’re sitting in the doctor’s surgery or waiting to pick up the kids, there are always bonus opportunities for reading during the day. Keep a book close at hand so you can dip into it whenever you have a spare 10 minutes.
Read for pleasure
Life is too short to read bad books. If you’re not enjoying something, you’re far less likely to stick with it especially when there are so many digital temptations in your way. Choose a book that gives you pleasure. I can promise you that it will be far more nourishing for your soul than watching a cat on a skateboard.
The Reading Party - the ultimate reading reset
If you’re struggling to make time in your life for books then the reading retreat I run here in Cornwall might be just what you need. Three of this year’s retreats are already sold out but there are still a couple of spaces for June and mid-October.
If you’re thinking about joining me but aren’t quite sure whether it’s for you, I’ve put together some answers to the most frequently asked questions.
What on earth is The Reading Party when it’s at home anyway?
I’m glad you asked. It’s simply a long weekend where you can relax, meet fellow booksworms and read away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life.
Where will I stay?
The Reading Party takes place at Middle Colenso Farm, my home in the far west of Cornwall where I have three lovely holiday cottages.
Do I have to share a room?
No. The prices are all based on single occupancy. However, if you’d like to come with a friend or partner, you can pay a supplement and share your room.
What about food?
The food is a major part of the retreat. The package includes delicious and nutritious meals prepared by my co-host and cook extraordinaire, Helen.
What else is included?
You can hang out and read in my library whenever you like. There are also opportunities for Pilates or sauna sessions on site. Guests receive a Reading Party goody bag which includes a book, a mug and other reading essentials.
Do we all read the same book?
I will send you a Cornish book and a reading list before you arrive but it’s really just something to break the ice. Nothing is compulsory. This is an opportunity for you to carve out some time to read on your own terms.
Can I explore the area?
Absolutely! Middle Colenso is close to beautiful Prussia Cove and you can easily get to St Ives, Penzance, Marazion and the Land’s End peninsula. The retreat also includes a tour of Penzance’s historic independent Morrab Library.
What kind of people take part?
Anyone who loves books - old, young, from the UK or abroad. It’s mainly women but men are very welcome. Some people come with a friend or spouse or partner. Helen and I are always on hand to look after you and make you feel welcome.
